These biting bouncing insects can be a real nuisance if they infest your home. They can be hard to spot and even harder to exterminate. Fleas are not only irritating, but can be dangerous as well. Fleas can cause flea allergy dermatitis (FAD), hair loss, secondary skin irritations and even tapeworms. What’s even more fascinating is that flea larvae can lay dormant for as long as one year before they hatch.
To avoid having these nasty parasites in your home, there are some effective remedies you can make and use to kill them and to keep them at bay.
It’s important to mention that before you start fighting fleas with all sorts of sprays and chemicals, you should vacuum your house thoroughly. Vacuum also under the furniture and pay special attention to the carpet and rug areas, because this is the fleas’ sweet spot.
Herbal flea spray
Prior to buying any of the insecticidal chemicals, you can make your own herbal flea spray which can be equally as effective.
What you will need:
- 1 vacuum bag
- Spray bottle
- About 2 liters of water
- About 4 liters of vinegar
- 500ml of lemon juice
- 250ml of witch hazel
Mix everything and your spray is ready. Once you’ve vacuumed the whole house (or the area of the house the fleas are in) take all the things that are washable (e.g. small rugs) and wash them at high temperatures to kill larvae and adult fleas. Then spray everywhere – carpets, windows, around the furniture, pet beddings, every corner and pretty much everything that’s anywhere near the infestation. Repeat this every day for at least 5 days and your house should be free from fleas.
Essential oil are known to be strong flea repellants, and they are perfectly safe for spraying inside the house.
What you will need:
- 25 drops of Citronella oil
- 15 drops of Lemongrass oil
- Tea tree oil
- 4 liters of warm water
Again, once you’ve vacuumed everything, mix the water with essential oils and then mop the floor with this. Repeat this for a few days, and then after 5 days it’s enough to do it once a week. This will not only ward off fleas, but ticks and mosquitoes as well.
